SRA EnviroSys Awarded Zero Waste Contract in SA
July 2008
Zero Waste SA (ZWSA), was formed in 2003 to “..provide strategic policy advice, direction to government and stakeholders, and funding for
programs and projects that maximise waste reduction and promote recycling and ecological sustainability (ZWSA Business Plan, 03-04).”
The SA Government is the first State Government to set up a Zero Waste agency with the remit of reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. To support this function, Zero Waste must be able to track the types of waste from source to destination to better understand the behaviours of households in industry with respect to waste. In July 2008, SRA Environmental was awarded the contract to implement a Data Management & Reporting System through its EnviroSys product.
EnviroSys will be configured the track the following types of waste:
- Residual Waste (to landfill)
- Green Waste (Organics)
- Hard Waste
- Recyclables
- Illegally Dumped Waste
The following aspects of each waste type will be tracked by EnviroSys:
- Cost of management (collection, disposal)
- Quantities by Stream (e.g. household kerbside, commercial & industrial)
- Location (GIS) of Illegally Dumped Waste
- Waste Direction (e.g. to recycling station, to landfill, from council site)
In addition to the configuration of EnviroSys, a Grants & Incentives module will be developed to support Zero Waste SA’s Grants Programs.
Damian Edwards is project managing this implementation with one of SRA Environmental’s new starters, Andrew McNeill as business analyst. Implementation will be over 3 phases with the first phase going live in December this year.
Both Damian & Andrew were fortunate enough to go on a site visit to several waste processing facilities throughout Adelaide to better appreciate the issues encountered through this industry. Facilities visited included a green waste processing facility, which purchases green garden waste from councils, processes this waste and sells it to primary producers as mulch.
